Appliances containing CFCs

Because of the hazardous chemicals they contain, these items fall under the 'Household Hazardous Waste' (HHW) category, and some extra steps will be required.

Please see your disposal options below

For non-working fridges and freezers, or other appliances containing CFCs:

Item(s) can be brought to the West Hants landfill, where disposal of hazardous waste is free of charge. Scalehouse staff will guide you to the drop-off area and provide aid with unloading if needed. (landfill info: GFL West Hants Landfill).

A trained professional can be hired to remove CFCs and place a "CFCs removed" sticker on the unit, which allows you to dispose of the unit during our curbside collection for metal. This special collection occurs once per year. To learn more, go to Special Collection event: Metal.

Please note: The municipality currently has no internal program in place for CFC removal services at someone’s home, nor a contract or service agreement with qualified professionals to perform this service for WHRM residents.
