The Parks & Recreation Department provides programs, services, facilities, parks and open space properties, which enhance the health and quality of life for residents of West Hants.
The Director of Parks and Recreation is responsible for overseeing a variety of projects, evaluating grant requests, and establishing and nurturing cooperative planning and working relationships with other local community agencies, government, non-profit, and private industry groups including provincial, regional, and national agencies concerned with recreation. The Director is also responsible for the oversight of the Riverbank Cemetery.
The Superintendent of Parks and Grounds oversees all parks and playground maintenance and recreation facilities ranging from walking & nature trails, playgrounds, sports fields/facilities, open spaces. The Superintendent also oversees the maintenance of the Riverbank Cemetery in Hantsport and a number of municipal properties.
The Department’s vision for physical activity is one where West Hants is a community where being active is the norm throughout the four seasons; where residents have the skills to benefit from recreation opportunities and where individuals and families are willing and able to access physical activity opportunities and infrastructure.
Our Active Communities Programmer, actively designs and delivers recreation opportunities for all age groups. The Programmer also leads the Active Avon Active Transportation Committee and is instrumental in facilitating the development of trails in our municipal parks.
The Parks and Recreation Department consists of seasonal or student employees throughout the years who assist with the implementation and coordination of our programs. The Municipality provides summer employment to students in parks and grounds and summer activity programs offered to children of all ages, at a variety of locations around West Hants.
