West Hants recyclables continue to be exceptionally clean. The bags are free of garbage, organics and the paper products are sorted correctly. We are recycling more than ever before and are throwing away less garbage. Keep up the good work!
When AREA 1 has garbage pickup, AREA 2 has recycle pickup and when AREA 1 has recycle pickup, AREA 2 has garbage pickup. Once you know which area you live in, follow that schedule so you will put out the right bags on the right week..
Not sure of which area your community is in and what day your garbage & recycling day (on alternate weeks) falls on?

HAVE A HAPPY AND SAFE HOLIDAY SEASON
Metal Collection: Once a year collection of metal items larger than 1ft2 and 70 % metal
are collected.
Items must be placed at the curb by 7:00 am on your regular collection day. There is no limit on the amount of acceptable metal items.
For a list of what this includes and what it doesn't include, click here.
AREA 1 June 14th – 17th, 2010
AREA 2 June 7th - 10th, 2010
These items can also be taken to the landfill year round.
Monitoring at Closed Gogmagun Landfill
Monitoring is completed as per NS Dept of Environment approved closure plan.
Leachate, surface water, groundwater and landfill gas are monitored for the required parameters on a quarterly, semi-annual or annual basis.
Confirm your collection area by checking the community names on the top of your calendar.
The number of bags per household is limited to 6 bags of garbage and 10 bags of clear or blue bag recyclables per collection.
Bags must be out by 7 a.m. in order to ensure collection.
All bagged regular garbage must be in clear bags no larger than 26"x36". One small coloured bag (e.g. grocery or kitchen catcher-sized bag) per large dear bag is allowed for bathroom waste. If you use small white bags for waste, you must either empty the small white bag into the larger clear bag (throw the dirty empty white bag in too) or you may use small clear bags for waste.
One large non-metal item may be substituted for one bag each garbage week. Examples include mattresses, boxspdngs, sofas, carpet and underlay (rolled, tied and shorter than 4 feet). Loose items must be bundled. Items must be bundled with rope, twine or tape.
All households are required to backyard compost. See below for more info.
Backyard Composting
In 1998, the province banned recyclables and food waste that is backyard compostable We are required to ensure that these items are not placed in the landfill, otherwise we could be fined. Fines will be passed on to the person(s) responsible and if it is municipal waste, fines would be paid with tax dollars. All households are required to backyard compost (BYC) some food wastes. See the recycling information for details.
Backyard composters may be purchased at hardware or home improvement stores. If you wish to build one, plans are available.
Backyardcomposting tips:
NEVER put meat, fish, bones or other animal products in your backyard composter.
ALWAYS cover fresh kitchen scraps with dried leaves, brown grass clippings, peat moss or other carbon material. This will reduce the possibility of odours and help the waste breakdown quicker
KEEP CONTENTS MOIST. The contents of your composter should be as damp as a well wrung out sponge. To keep it moist add a little water or leave the cover off your plastic composter when it rains.
Small pieces breakdown faster than large pieces. Larger items should be chopped before being composted.
Finished compost can be used on gardens, trees, shrubs, lawns etc. for a natural boost.
Large amounts of paper plates are regular garbage. Try using napkins or reusable plates instead.
Winter composting: Collect leaves in the fall to have a winter supply for your backyard composter. Always cover fresh kitchen scraps with a layer of dried leaves. The leaves will help the scraps break down and help to control any smell.
Even though composting slows down in the winter, it is still working through the freeze and thaw cycles. Keep a container near your house for your fresh kitchen scraps when the snow is too deep to get to your composter. The frozen scraps will not smell and can be put in the composter when the weather allows.
